Keratosis Pilaris
The world calls it ‘Chicken Skin’. What I am describing is the rough, pimply patches on your upper arms, cheeks, thighs or even your bum. Sometimes it can feel dry, textured or slightly red especially when your skin is dehydrated or irritated. There is nothing to worry about as this is not contagious. It is a harmless skin condition and can affect loads of people…female and male. It is not itchy, does not hurt and it should clear by it self… with time. And it is nothing to be embarassed about.
So what causes it?
It is a build up of keratin. Keratin is a hard protein that protects your skin from infectious or harmless substances. No one knows why it occurs but one of the reasons could be genetics. If you suffer with dry skin you may suffer more with it. If anything else visibly it can be embarrassing.
How can you Help Improve it?
The good news is there are simple ways to help smooth and soften the skin over time.
- Gently exfoliate the area using a body scrub to help remove dead skin cells.
- Don’t over-scrub though, as this can irritate the skin even more.
- Dry brushing 2–3 times a week can also help encourage smoother skin.
- Moisturising is key. Look for products containing ingredients such as AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid), urea or salicylic acid, as these help soften the skin and encourage cell renewal.
- A nourishing body oil can also work beautifully alongside your moisturiser.
- If your usual body cream doesn’t contain these ingredients, that’s absolutely fine too — consistency is more important.
Try to moisturise morning and evening to keep the skin soft, supple and hydrated.
It’s also worth avoiding very hot baths, long soaks and harsh soaps or shower gels, as these can strip the skin of its natural oils and make dryness worse. After exfoliating or showering, gently pat the skin dry rather than rubbing with a towel, as rubbing can cause further irritation.
Be Patience With Your Skin
With regular care and hydration, the skin can gradually become smoother and less noticeable over time. If you are concerned or it doesn’t improve, it’s always best to speak to your GP or local pharmacist for further advice.
And finally… this summer, wear the sleeveless dress. Wear the vest top. Show your arms off proudly. Most people won’t even notice the tiny bumps — but they will notice your confidence, your energy and your smile ✨
